Going Solar Checklist

Going Solar? Here’s What to Consider

What to Expect During the Process of Going Solar

First read our step by step guide to the solar process.

How much solar power can be produced in your climate?

With advancements in technology and solar battery storage, solar capacity has greatly expanded to include cooler, less sun-rich climates. Connect with a local solar installer to determine your production capacity.

How is your home positioned?

Placement of a rooftop solar array will make a difference in power production. Some solar installers can mount panels on the ground if the roof is not feasible. Connect with an installer in your area to determine the best placement and orientation of your solar array.

How much energy does your home use in a day (“energy load”)?

Your “energy load” will help to dictate how many panels you will need and the wattage capacity of the panels. Here how to figure out your “energy load”:

  • What is the square footage of your home?

  • How many people live in your home?

  • What type of appliances are used and how many do you have?

  • What is your energy consumption behavior? i.e., Do you remember to turn off lights? Do you watch a lot of tv? Do you have an electric car? Do you do a lot of laundry? Do you use heating or air conditioning?
